BIRCH TREE TAPPING
Birch Tree Tapping Requirements:
- A Sikes Act Permit (SAP) is required for all individuals entering USAG Alaska managed lands and is required to tap birch trees.
- A tree tapping permit is not required.
- Tree tapping is prohibited on the Main Cantonment of Fort Greely and Fort Wainwright, and prohibited in all restricted areas which include Impact Areas and areas Off-Limits to Recreation. Visit the Refference Maps page or the Recreation Regulation if you would like to review the Main Cantonment boundaries.
- Tree tapping is allowed starting 1 April and all tree tapping equipment must be removed by 31 May.
- All tree tapping equipment must be labeled with the responsible party's name, SAP number, and phone number.
- Tree tapping is limited to 6 trees per individual SAP.
- Trees must be at least 6 inches in diameter and tap must be less than 1/2 inch in diameter.
- Each tapped tree must have its own catchment system to reduce tripping or entanglement hazard. Do not connect collection tubing between trees, or have multiple catchment containers per tree. One tree, one container.
For advice on sustainable birch tree tapping review the Backyard Birch Tapping and Syrup Basics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
